Is there anyway to control the text displayed in the featured content- such as just showing two or three lines of text instead of the entire excerpt, or just the first paragraph? The formatting there is different, also. Paragraphs are crammed together without the same spacing seen in the blog post.

No, you cannot control the image or the text for the featured content.
You may however use the excerpt box in the post to decrease or increase the number of words. The featured box uses the first image uploaded for the post which is not customizable.

There is so much I like about Spotlight. I think it would be more marketable if users could choose between the current configuration and either a static image or series of images to be displayed in the current featured selection box.
I've tried turning off the featured selection area by setting it to an empty category, but that doesn't work.
