    How do I activate the popular post function in my sidebar panel? Now it only displays recent posts and comments.

    Do I need a certain plug in for that?

    Yes, you need this plugin http://www.alleba.com/blog/2007/03/27/wordpress-plugin-daily-top-10-posts/ to activate popular posts functionality for the sidebar.
